CCTV - from Analog to Digital and IP

The term Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is used to describe the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to specific places or to restricted viewers in contrast to broadcast TV. The term is popular and used to describe surveillance systems in areas that require monitoring such as the home premise, or commercial buildings including banks, casinos, factories, and in public spaces such as parks, gardens and roads. Why use CCTV? CCTV is now more affordable, better, accessible via the internet, and enhances your security when used with a monitored alarm system. Police response! Police resources are generally stretched and some agencies charge a call out fee to attend false alarms. The chances of identifying a burglary and catching the perpetrator is more likely, because the series of events which take place in responding to an alarm, identifying a burglary and reporting it to the police is actioned in minutes. Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) CCTV allows the user to easily and safely respond to an alarm by accessing the CCTV system via the internet.  Traditionally enterprises send hire security gurads or use their own employees to check on alarms on-site and which puts them in an unsafe situation should they encounter burglars in the premise. Technology The quality of security cameras and recorders can provide high resolution pictures, and manufacturers are producing 3 common technologies now, SDI, IP and analog. Serial digital interface (SDI) is based on a family of digital video interfaces for broadcasting motion pictures is becoming popular in upgrading analog CCTV systems that use coaxial cable. New installations can take advantage of IP Ethernet based cameras which are popular due to the low cost of cabling products, and they use the same technology as used in computer networks. Types of Recording Technologies There are two types of recording solutions, standalone complete of the shelf (COTS) or software Video Management System. The COTS system may be ideal for some small scale or domestic solutions where and deployment of the same type of camera hardware is supplied by the same manufacturer, minimising compatibility issues. However COTS system can vary in quality and features and performance. Where integration with other cameras is necessary, the COTS solution may be limited in functionality and compatibility. Video Management Solution (VMS) is software based solutions that is independent of the underlying hardware. VMS can be installed in server environments or onto custom PC built systems. VMS can be feature rich, and compatible with large range of cameras  as the developers continue to provide updated camera drivers to support newly developed cameras. What Proeye can do for you!
